Salem, Massachusetts in the fall – My experience
Salem, Massachusetts, in the fall, was always on my bucket list. In October of 2025, I spent 5 days on a fall road trip through New England, stopping in Salem for the day on my way into Boston for the weekend. Typically, Salem gets pretty crowded in October due to the Halloween crowds, but I went early in the month on a weekday and was surprised to not experience too many crowds. I was easily able to get into restaurants, coffee shops, and stores without having to wait in long lines. I also toured the House of Seven Gables and was able to walk right in without any lines. After my experience in Salem in the fall, especially in October, I would recommend trying to go during the week if possible. I was able to easily find street parking, but most of the street parking is reserved for Salem residents on the weekends.

citizenM: CitizenM is a popular hotel in Boston, known for its boutique and artsy decor. It is walking distance to many attractions in Boston such as the public garden and art museum.
Boston Omni Parker House: If you want a more luxurious stay in Boston, check out the Omni. This hotel is located on the Freedom Trail and a short walk from Boston Common.

This is where you can walk around and see some of your favorite Halloween characters, such as the Hocus Pocus witches, Freddy Krueger, IT, Frankenstein, and more! There are also tons of souvenir shops, restaurants, tarot readers, and more Halloween fun!
Visit the Salem Witch Museum
One thing you must do when visiting Salem in the fall is check out the Salem Witch Museum. This is one of Salem’s top attractions and is a great way to kick off your trip. At the museum you’ll be able to learn all about the Salem Witch Trials and the history of Salem.

If you are staying in Boston on your fall trip to Salem, there are several ways to get to Boston from Salem.
Option number one is to rent a car. I recommend renting a car if you are planning to visit other destinations in New England, especially outside of Massachusetts. Boston is only a 30 minute drive from Salem, so a really easy day trip to do with a rental car!

The other option to get from Boston to Salem in the fall is to Uber or take public transportation. There is a train that runs from Boston to Salem, which makes for super easy access between the two cities. The other option, my personal favorite option, is to take a boat! There is a ferry that runs from Boston to Salem and is a great option for anyone looking to take the scenic route.
